Cataracts

Cataracts can develop due to various factors, including aging, eye injuries, and sun exposure. While age-related cataracts progress gradually, others might appear more rapidly. Our experienced optometrists are available to discuss your options, including the suitability of surgery. If treatment is needed, our surgical coordination team is skilled in performing cataract removal surgery.

Are cataracts clouding your vision?

A cataract develops when your eye's natural lens becomes cloudy. It is like looking through a foggy or dusty car windshield. Things look blurry, hazy or less colorful with a cataract. Aging is the most common cause of cataracts. However other reasons you may get cataracts include medical problems, eye injuries, sun exposure or medications and smoking. Most age-related cataracts develop gradually. Other cataracts can develop more quickly, such as those in younger people or those in people with diabetes. Doctors cannot predict how quickly a person’s cataract will develop.
iOL Cataract Treatment

Cataract Treatment

The only treatment for cataracts is surgery to remove the cataract and put in a new clear artificial lens. This new lens is called an IOL. Cataract surgery is now the most commonly performed outpatient surgery in the US. It is an elective outpatient procedure. Cataract surgery is performed by Ophthalmologists (eye surgeons).

Cataract surgery is considered an option when the patient’s vision is bothersome and cannot be fixed with less invasive means. If you choose to pursue cataract surgery with STL Vision our surgical coordination team will make the process smooth and easy.

What to Expect

At the pre-operative visit your surgeon will fully discuss with you the risks, benefits and alternatives to cataract surgery and answer any questions you have. Our surgeons are happy to offer their patients the latest in modern day cataract surgery including laser assisted cataract surgery (LACS) and advanced technology IOLs.

You will be able to decide what type of lens will work best for you in discussion with your surgeon. The day of the surgery you will be made comfortable with IV medication and topical eye drops. You will go home that same day and return for a postoperative visit in our clinic the day after surgery. Our team will be there to answer any questions along the way as you recover and enjoy your new vision!
