Diabetic Eye Exams

Diabetes can significantly impact eye health, potentially leading to changes in vision. Regular eye screenings are important for individuals with diabetes, as eye complications can develop even with careful management. Our specialists offer comprehensive care for diabetic eye disease, addressing all types and severities through various treatments such as eye drops, injections, and surgical interventions.

Diabetes & Eye Health

Diabetes can greatly affect your eye health. High blood sugar levels cause damage to blood vessels in the retina. These blood vessels can swell and leak. Or they can close, stopping blood from passing through. Sometimes abnormal, new blood vessels grow on the retina. All of these changes can steal your vision.

Annual Eye Screenings

The American Academy of Ophthalmology currently recommends that people with type 1 diabetes have annual screenings for diabetic retinopathy beginning 5 years after the onset of their disease, and that those with type 2 diabetes should have an examination at the time of diagnosis and once a year thereafter at a minimum. Diabetic retinopathy can develop in anyone, even those who manage their diabetes carefully.

The specialists at STL Vision provide treatment for all types and severity of diabetic eye disease. Treatment can include eye drops, eye injections or surgical options.
