Age-Related Macular Degeneration

The fellowship trained experts at STL Vision provide diagnosis and treatment for all types of retinal problems including retinal vein and artery occlusions, flashes, floaters, retinal tears and detachment, and macular degeneration. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a problem with your retina. It happens when a part of the retina called the macula is damaged. With AMD you lose your central vision. You cannot see fine details, whether you are looking at something close or far. But your peripheral (side) vision will still be normal. AMD is very common. It is a leading cause of vision loss in people 50 years or older.
STL Vision Healthy Diet recommendations

Risk & Treatment

You may be at a higher risk of developing AMD if you have a family history of the disease, eat a high fat diet, smoke, have high blood pressure or are overweight. There are 2 main types of AMD, commonly referred to as dry and wet.

The treatment options differ for these and our team will explain your options so you can make an informed decision. Dark leafy greens, yellow fruits and vegetables, fish, and a balanced, nutrient-rich diet have been shown beneficial for people with AMD. Eye vitamins (Areds 2 ) may also be recommended by your doctor.
